The Atelier

Intent

At Hunningley Primary Academy, our Atelier provides a nurturing, purposeful and inspiring environment for pupils who are working significantly below age-related expectations, typically two years or more behind their chronological age, and for those who require additional support with language, communication, interaction, social, emotional and mental health needs.

Inspired by the principles of the Reggio Emilia Approach, we believe every child is capable, curious and full of potential. We aim to respect and challenge each child whilst nurturing creativity, independence, communication and meaningful relationships. The Atelier is not a separate pathway but an inclusive provision that enables children to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to access and succeed within the wider school community.

We recognise that inclusion starts in the classroom and that every teacher is a teacher of SEND. The Atelier complements high-quality classroom teaching by providing targeted opportunities to remove barriers to learning, strengthen foundations and develop the language, self-regulation and learning behaviours pupils need to thrive.

Through carefully designed experiences, we aim to:

  • Develop communication and language as the foundation for learning.
  • Strengthen emotional regulation, resilience and wellbeing.
  • Foster curiosity, creativity and problem-solving.
  • Build trusting relationships that support engagement and belonging.
  • Develop independence and confidence as learners.
  • Enable pupils to successfully access an ambitious curriculum and participate fully in school life.

Ultimately, our intent is that every child experiences success, feels valued and develops the skills, confidence and self-belief to achieve their potential.

Implementation

The Atelier is a purpose-built learning environment, led by a qualified teacher who is also the school's Inclusion Lead. It is timetabled throughout the day and provides structured support for pupils across the school whose needs require additional provision beyond their classroom experience.

Provision is carefully planned around pupils' identified learning, communication and SEMH needs and is closely aligned to classroom learning to ensure coherence and continuity.

The Atelier provides:

Communication and Language Development

  • Explicit teaching of vocabulary, language structures and communication skills.
  • Opportunities for purposeful talk, discussion and collaborative learning.
  • Structured interventions and activities that support speech, language and communication needs.

Social, Emotional and Mental Health Support

  • Teaching of emotional literacy, self-awareness and self-regulation strategies.
  • Safe space for reflection, coaching and restorative conversations.
  • Support to develop resilience, confidence and positive relationships.
  • Consistent routines and predictable structures that promote psychological safety.

Reggio-Inspired Learning Experiences

  • Open-ended, enquiry-based opportunities that encourage curiosity and exploration.
  • Carefully selected resources that invite creativity, investigation and independent thinking.
  • Rich opportunities for pupils to express understanding through a range of media and approaches.
  • Learning experiences that value pupil voice, interests and individual strengths.

Academic Support and Curriculum Access

  • Pre-teaching and overlearning of key concepts.
  • Scaffolded instruction that enable pupils to access curriculum content successfully.
  • Small-group and targeted teaching matched to pupils' needs.
  • Continuous assessment and responsive planning to address misconceptions and gaps.

Inclusive Practice

  • Close collaboration between class teachers, support staff and families.
  • Regular review of progress, provision and outcomes.
  • Clear links between Atelier learning and classroom learning.
  • High expectations for all pupils, focusing on strengths rather than limitations.

The Atelier operates as both a place of support and a place of possibility, ensuring that pupils experience success whilst maintaining high ambition for what they can achieve.
