Immersive Classroom

Introduction

At Hunningley Primary Academy, we believe that children deserve learning experiences that are memorable, meaningful and transformative. Our state-of-the-art Immersive Classroom has been designed to bring learning to life, enabling pupils to experience the curriculum in ways that inspire curiosity, deepen understanding and broaden their horizons. Far more than a technological innovation, the Immersive Classroom is a powerful pedagogical tool that supports how children learn, remember and apply knowledge. Through immersive, multi-sensory experiences, we create opportunities for pupils to engage with the world beyond the classroom, enriching their understanding and fostering a lifelong love of learning.

Intent

At Hunningley Primary Academy, we believe that learning is most effective when new knowledge is connected to meaningful experiences and existing understanding. Our Immersive Classroom has been designed around the principles of cognitive science and educational research, recognising that children learn more successfully when information is presented through multiple channels, connected to prior learning and embedded within memorable experiences.

By enabling pupils to see, hear, feel and experience concepts that might otherwise remain abstract, we help children to develop stronger mental models, build secure schemas and make meaningful connections across the curriculum. Research demonstrates that learning is strengthened when information is encoded through both verbal and visual pathways and when experiences are memorable enough to support retrieval and long-term retention.

Our ambition is to develop pupils who know more, remember more and can do more. Through carefully planned immersive experiences, we seek to strengthen vocabulary acquisition, deepen understanding, increase knowledge retention and provide rich contextual experiences that enhance cultural capital. From Nursery to Year 6, every child is given opportunities to explore people, places, events and environments that they may otherwise never encounter, ensuring they develop a rich understanding of the world around them.

Implementation

Our Immersive Classroom features three floor-to-ceiling projection walls, an interactive immersive floor, vibration technology and scent machines, creating a fully interactive learning environment that stimulates multiple senses. This technology is deliberately integrated within our curriculum and is utilised whenever it enhances teaching, deepens understanding or provides a valuable context for learning.

Teachers plan immersive experiences with clear curriculum outcomes in mind. These experiences are used to introduce new concepts, strengthen background knowledge, enrich vocabulary, support retrieval of previously taught content and provide a common reference point for future learning. Whether children are standing amongst the flames of the Great Fire of London, exploring the world of the Vikings, journeying through Ancient Egypt, experiencing the effects of an earthquake or visiting significant landmarks and places of worship around the world, immersive experiences are carefully linked to curriculum objectives.

The Immersive Classroom is also used extensively to enhance writing opportunities. By providing authentic experiences, pupils are able to gather ideas, develop subject-specific vocabulary and create vivid mental images that inspire high-quality spoken and written outcomes. Through repeated references to these shared experiences, teachers help pupils to make connections, strengthen recall and embed learning into long-term memory.

Impact

The Immersive Classroom transforms learning from something children simply learn about into something they experience. As a result, pupils demonstrate high levels of engagement, stronger recall of key knowledge, richer vocabulary and greater confidence when discussing their learning. The multi-sensory nature of the environment supports pupils in retaining information, making meaningful connections across subjects and applying their knowledge in new contexts.

By providing memorable and authentic experiences, the Immersive Classroom helps children develop deeper understanding that extends beyond surface-level learning. Pupils are better able to retrieve knowledge, articulate their thinking and connect new learning to what they already know. This leads to stronger outcomes across the curriculum and supports our ambition for every child to become a confident, knowledgeable and curious learner.

Ultimately, the impact extends far beyond academic achievement. The Immersive Classroom broadens horizons, develops cultural understanding, nurtures imagination and inspires pupils to ask questions about the world around them. Through the thoughtful combination of immersive technology and evidence-informed practice, we create learning experiences that are memorable, meaningful and enduring.

Our Vision

‘We don't just teach children about the world; we bring the world to them.’

This approach ensures that pupils not only encounter knowledge, but experience it, retain it and apply it with confidence throughout their educational journey.
