At Hunningley Primary Academy, we are committed to providing every child with the strongest possible start to their educational journey. Our Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum is designed to nurture, stimulate and challenge children through an ambitious, knowledge-rich and language-focused approach that lays the foundations for future success.
We believe that every child can achieve and that all children deserve access to an exceptional education regardless of their starting points, background, experiences or individual needs.
Through an inclusive and equitable curriculum, we work to remove barriers to learning and ensure that disadvantaged and vulnerable children receive the support, intervention and opportunities needed to thrive alongside their peers.
Communication and language form the foundation of our curriculum. We place the development of vocabulary, speaking and listening skills at the heart of everything we do, recognising that language is the gateway to future learning. Through carefully planned experiences, high-quality interactions and purposeful teaching, children develop the knowledge, skills and vocabulary required to become confident communicators and successful learners.
We are passionate about ensuring our children develop the cultural capital needed to succeed both academically and socially. Through rich first-hand experiences, visits, outdoor learning, immersive opportunities and carefully chosen texts, children develop a deep understanding of themselves, their community and the wider world. Alongside this, we foster curiosity, resilience, independence and confidence through our Foundational Curriculum, ensuring children develop the positive learning behaviours and attitudes that will support them throughout their education.
By the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage, we aim for every child to leave as a confident, capable and enthusiastic learner who is ready for the next stage of their educational journey and excited about the opportunities ahead.
Our Early Years curriculum is delivered through a carefully planned balance of direct instruction, purposeful play, exploration and high-quality adult interactions. Learning is sequenced to ensure children progressively develop knowledge, skills and vocabulary across all seven areas of learning whilst building secure foundations for future success.
Children benefit from explicit teaching of key concepts, vocabulary and routines, alongside opportunities to apply and deepen their learning through carefully planned continuous provision both indoors and outdoors. Staff continually check for understanding through observation, questioning and assessment, enabling learning to be adapted responsively to meet the needs of every child.
Communication and language permeate every aspect of the curriculum. High-quality texts, storytelling, singing, conversation and vocabulary instruction are central to daily practice. Early Reading is prioritised through the systematic teaching of Read Write Inc. Phonics, ensuring children develop the foundations needed to become confident and successful readers.
Our Foundational Curriculum is embedded throughout daily life in Early Years. Expectations, routines and behaviours are explicitly taught and consistently reinforced to develop independence, self-regulation, resilience and confidence. Strong relationships and nurturing interactions ensure children feel safe, valued and able to take risks in their learning.
Children benefit from a rich programme of experiences designed to broaden horizons and build cultural capital. Learning extends beyond the classroom through woodland learning, outdoor exploration, educational visits, performances, gardening, cooking, community engagement and immersive experiences that bring learning to life. Strong partnerships with families further enhance children's development through shared expectations and collaborative support.
The impact of our Early Years curriculum is reflected in the confident, curious and capable learners who leave Nursery and Reception ready for the next stage of their education. Children make strong progress from their individual starting points and develop the knowledge, skills and vocabulary required to achieve success across the curriculum.
Children develop as confident communicators, enthusiastic readers and independent learners who demonstrate resilience, curiosity and positive attitudes towards learning. Regular assessment and responsive teaching ensure that all children, including those who are disadvantaged or vulnerable, are supported to achieve highly and fulfil their potential.
The impact of our Foundational Curriculum is evident in the behaviours, attitudes and personal qualities demonstrated by our children. They show kindness, respect, independence and responsibility, whilst developing the confidence to engage with new experiences and challenges.
By the end of Reception, children possess the cultural capital, communication skills and learning behaviours needed to thrive in Key Stage One. They leave the Early Years Foundation Stage as happy, confident and aspirational learners who are exceptionally well prepared for the next stage of their educational journey and life beyond the classroom.
